EMERGENCY SERVICES Campus Police Campus Police officers are
sworn police officers under state statutory authority and are trained to cope
with emergencies and other problems on campus and in the immediate area of
the campus. Their primary responsibilities are to protect the people and
property under their jurisdiction, to maintain peace and order, and to
protect constitutional rights. Campus Police officers investigate crimes and
enforce state criminal statutes, the Illinois Vehicle Code, and University
rules and regulations. All officers operate under the community policing
philosophy within defined "focus areas." Every officer has
ownership of a defined area where they work in partnership with their
community to help solve identified problems. Visit www.dps.uiuc.edu to
identify the officer assigned to a particular area of campus. Any incidents
on University property should be reported to them immediately. Call 9 + 911
from University phones (just 911 from all other phones) for emergency service
and police patrol officer assistance or 333-1216 for administrative calls.
The Campus Police office is located in the Public Safety Building at 1110
West Springfield, Urbana. SAFETY SERVICES Division of Environmental
Health and Safety The role of the Division of
Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS) is to advise and consult in matters
relating to the health and safety of faculty, staff, students, and visitors,
and in matters related to compliance programs for campus activities. DEHS
functions in direct support of the teaching, research, and public service
mission of the campus. Major program responsibilities within DEHS are
distributed among the Biological Safety Section (safe handling, transport,
use, and disposal of biological materials; quality assurance oversight of
research conducted according to Good Laboratory Practice regulations; and the
coordination of the campus medical surveillance program), the Chemical Safety
Section (safe handling, transport, use, and disposal of chemicals as well as
chemical waste minimization), the Environmental Compliance Section
(environmental permit and remediation oversight, environmental assessments,
and underground storage tanks), the Occupational Safety and Health Section
(accident injury prevention, asbestos management oversight, boiler and
pressure vessel oversight, building plan reviews regarding safety issues,
fire safety, food sanitation, and industrial hygiene), and the Radiation
Safety Section (acquisition, use, storage, and disposal of radioactive
materials, and x-ray and laser safety programs). |

For these programs, DEHS personnel
provide assistance with code, guideline, and regulatory interpretation;
coordination of regulatory compliance programs; technical assistance and
interpretative analysis of technical reference materials; training and
education programs; the development of health and safety standards; health
and safety evaluations; assistance to emergency response units; and
assistance in the establishment of intradepartmental health and safety
programs. DEHS occupies the Environmental Health and Safety Building located
at 101 South Gregory Street, Urbana. For additional information, call
333-2755. OFFICE SUPPORT SERVICES Office of Mail Services The Office of Mail Services has
two units: Campus Mail Distribution and the Mailing Center. Campus Mail Distribution is
located at 1109 West Main Street in Urbana. Its staff members are responsible
for delivering all intracampus mail. At this location, all incoming U.S. mail
that is improperly addressed is readdressed. Campus Mail Distribution
provides most offices with daily pickup and delivery of campus mail Monday
through Friday, except on holidays. It also is one of the locations with a
drop-off box for materials going to the Chicago campus via the overnight
shuttle. To ensure that mail is received
in a timely manner, consult the mailing guidelines in the front section of
the Student/Staff Directory. Any questions or concerns with
intra-campus mail should be brought to the attention of the Manager by
calling 333-2029 or email flthomas@uiuc.edu The Mailing Center is located
at 1611 South Oak Street, Champaign. Its staff members are responsible for
handling all outgoing U.S. and foreign mail. Mass campus mailings that
require addressing, inserting, or other preparation are also handled at this
location. Services for bulk production include automatic bursting, folding,
intelligent inserting, inkjetting, labeling, and metering. Other center services include:
pickups and deliveries, daily mail preparation, data processing, warehousing,
the sale of postage stamps, business reply mail service, and complete
consultation about United States Postal Service rules and regulations. If the
campus has a mail-related need that the Mailing Center cannot fulfill, its
staff will locate the best service for the best price. The Mailing Center is another
location with a drop-off box for materials going to the Chicago campus via
the overnight shuttle. The Manager of the Mailing
Center (333-6101) is the official liaison between the campus and the United
States Postal Service. Any questions, concerns, or problems with U.S. or
campus mail should be brought to the attention of the manager. Campus Receiving Campus Receiving provides
delivery service for the Campus. For questions or requests concerning
problems, policies or services, information on receipt or delivery, or to
schedule a pick-up of materials for shipment through Campus Receiving call
333-1653 or e-mail whisnant@uiuc.edu. |

OTHER SERVICES University of Illinois
Foundation The University of Illinois
Foundation is authorized by the Board of Trustees of the University as the
official private gift fundraising and gift-receipting arm of the University.
As such, the foundation is the agency that coordinates solicitations - by both
the foundation and the campuses - directed at individuals, corporations, and
philanthropic foundations for support of University programmatic needs. Foundation representatives are
available to discuss fundraising proposals with faculty members, to advise
them about the feasibility of raising private gifts for particular programs
or projects, and to work with faculty or groups to develop appropriate plans
for solicitations. The foundation does not, however, seek support for
purposes that have not been approved by appropriate campus and University
officials. In addition, a staff of specialists can assist prospective donors with
wills, trusts, and estate planning as they relate to gifts for the
University. Ombuds Officer The Ombuds Officer (333-1345)
works confidentially, informally, and impartially to assist faculty, staff,
and students to resolve problems within the University. The services of the
Ombuds Office do not replace the formal grievance procedures outlined by the
University. Bevier Cafeteria Bevier Cafeteria, located on
the second floor of Bevier Hall in the northwest corner, is open for coffee
and pastries from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. and for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00
p.m. on days when classes are in session (except during the summer session).
The cafeteria is a self-supporting business providing experience in quantity
food preparation, service, and management for students under the guidance of
an instructor, a dietitian, and laboratory assistants. Child Care Resource Service
(CCRS) The Child Care Resource Service
(333-3252) is part of the statewide network of child care resource and
referral agencies. CCRS serves Champaign, Douglas, Iroquois, Macon, Piatt,
and Vermilion counties and is funded in part by the Illinois Department of
Human Services. CCRS is a program of the Department of Human and Community
Development and UI Extension at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The CCRS provides families seeking child care with a list of local child care
options and information on how to select quality care, supports child care
providers with training opportunities and resource development, maintains
current local data on child care supply and demand, and administers the state
subsidy program, which offers financial assistance for child care to
qualifying families. In addition, CCRS maintains a list of University of
Illinois students interested in babysitting. |
