Definitions of Educational and Personal Leaves

November 2, 2005

Educational Leave – an educational leave is intended for faculty and academic professionals who will be participating in an endeavor that will increase their contributions as a scholar to the university upon their return. This could include time spent working at a national lab, teaching at another institution, researching a book and other like activities.  The department head will be responsible for making the case that granting this leave is in the best interests of the University.  Absent compelling circumstances, educational leaves will not be granted to faculty who have accepted a position at another institution or other full time employment.

Personal Leave- a personal leave is intended for faculty and academic professionals who need time off to attend to matters which impact their individual lives and are unrelated to their career at the university.  These circumstances would include taking a position at another institution with the intent of not returning to UIUC, providing additional time to spend with family, and other personal pursuits.
