APPOINTMENTS REQUIRING DIRECT APPROVAL

BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

(For University-Wide Use)

 All academic appointments require approval by the Board of Trustees; however, certain appointments require a more direct approval process in that details of the appointments must be submitted for approval via a Board meeting agenda item.  (The appointments are made effective Monday following the Board meeting or on a later date.)

 Following are three groups of appointments that require presentation in an agenda item, whether via individual personnel item or grouped with other appointments: 

  1.  Board approval is required prior to the effective date of the appointment regardless of salary amount for the following positions:
    1. Permanent, Acting, or Interim Vice President
    2. Permanent, Acting, or Interim Chancellor or Vice Chancellor
    3. Permanent, Acting, or Interim Dean
    4. Permanent, Acting, or Interim Director of the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics
    5. Division of Intercollegiate Athletics multi-year contracts:

a)      new (first-time) multi-year agreements

b)      renewal of a pre-existing multi-year agreement that has expired

c)      major change to an existing multi-year agreement

  6.  Permanent Department Head or Chair (Acting and Interim are exempt)

 

  1. Prior Board approval is required for new administrative appointments, including promotions, with a total (including 0% stipends) salary greater than $90,000 if  the positions are permanent (not acting or interim).  Titles include: 
    1. Associate or Assistant Vice President
    2. Associate, Deputy Associate, or Assistant Chancellor
    3. Associate or Assistant Vice Chancellor (or Provost)
    4. Associate or Assistant Dean
    5. Associate or Assistant Head
    6. Associate Legal Counsel
    7. Regional Vice Dean (College of Medicine)
    8. Director or Executive Director
    9. Associate or Assistant Director
    10. Assistant or Special Assistant to the Chancellor, Dean, Director, Head, or Chair
    11. Chief Information Officer
    12. Chief of Police
    13. General Manager of Radio Station
    14. New Head Varsity Coaches
    15. Chief Operating Officer, U of I Hospital and Clinics
    16. Service Line Administrator, U of I Hospital and Clinics
    17. Service Line Medical Director, U of I Hospital and Clinics
    18. Chief of Section (Chicago medical position)
    19. Chief of Service, U of I Hospital and Clinics

 

  1. Board approval is required for the following faculty appointments; however approval is not required prior to the effective date of the appointment since it is imperative that we have teaching faculty members in place:
    1. New probationary faculty, including those with “Q” appointments, regardless of total salary amount
    1. New faculty appointed with indefinite tenure, regardless of total salary amount
