Employment Resources for Dual-Career Partners

PREFACE

Members of the household of new UIUC academic staff members often require assistance to become oriented with the types of positions available at the University and in the local community. The Office of Academic Human Resources is a resource for members of dual-career couples seeking assistance with a job search.

DUAL-CAREER PARTNERS PROGRAM
The Office of Academic Human Resources coordinates the dual-career partners program for the campus. Spouses and partners holding a minimum of a bachelor's degree and seeking employment on or off campus should call (217) 333-6747 for additional information about the potential opportunities and resources available to them.

UIUC JOB REGISTRY
The Office of University Human Resources maintains the UIUC Job Registry, a compilation of academic professional staff and faculty openings (excluding assistantships). The Job Registry listing contains brief summaries of the qualifications required for various positions. New openings only are summarized in the Inside Illinois, published the first and third Thursdays of every month during the academic year and available on campus. Complete job announcements are available for review in the Job Registry notebook (8:30-5:00, Monday through Friday), Office of Academic Human Resources, 807 S. Wright St., Suite 420, Champaign, IL 61820.

STAFF HUMAN RESOURCES (SHR) OFFICE (formerly Personnel Services Office)
The Staff Human Resources Office (52 E. Gregory, Champaign, IL) administers the employment of civil service staff members working in managerial, professional, technical, clerical, skilled craft, and service positions throughout the campus. Applicants for staff positions should attend an information session offered by the Personnel Service Office on a bi-weekly basis. For information about these sessions and how to apply for positions, contact the office at (217) 333-2137.

GRADUATE COLLEGE SCHOLARS' PROGRAM
The UIUC Research Board provides support for research in response to applications submitted by members of the faculty or academic professional staff. In 1984, the Graduate College, through the Research Board, initiated a program of limited appointments for academically qualified persons as Graduate College Scholars to permit these individuals to continue research, scholarship, and creative work in an academic environment. The Program is part of a campus effort to address the problems in recruiting and retaining highly qualified faculty and professional staff due to limited local career opportunities for dual-career couples.

The Graduate Scholars' Program is open to members of dual-career couples whose residence in the Urbana-Champaign community depends on professional opportunities for both members within the University. One of the members must be a faculty member or be under consideration for either a tenured or tenure-track faculty position at the University. To be eligible, applicants must have academic credentials of UIUC faculty caliber, have received the terminal degree normally required of faculty in that discipline, and have the endorsement of the head of a UIUC academic unit relevant to the potential Scholar's discipline. Applicants may have a current University appointment other than a tenure-track or tenured faculty appointment. The extent to which any current departmental affiliations already provide necessary support will be considered in the decision process.

A Scholar usually receives a zero-percent appointment through an academic department and/or the Graduate College. Scholars may be considered by the Research Board for grants of seed money (up to $5000, one-time grant) and may apply for external support with the endorsement of the University. Scholars also have access to computer time, an electronic mail account, faculty library privileges, a campus mailbox, telephone answering service, and office or laboratory space as negotiated.

Contact the UIUC Campus Research Board (217-333-0030) for more information and application materials.
