General Information About UIUC Academic Searches

HOW TO FIND OUT ABOUT ACADEMIC JOB VACANCIES

Academic Human Resources maintains the currently available Faculty and "Other Academic" position openings at the UIUC campus. Closing dates are indicated at the end of each listing.
The UIUC Job Registry, compiled by the Office of University Human Resources, is a listing of academic professional staff and some faculty openings (excluding assistantships). The Job Registry listings contain brief summaries of the qualifications required for various positions.  Closing dates are indicated at the end of each listing.

Job Registry notebooks, containing more complete descriptions of academic professional staff and faculty openings, may be consulted in the Office of Academic Human Resources, 807 S. Wright, Suite 420, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Job seekers may sign out job announcements and make photocopies at local copyshops.

Inside Illinois, the internal newspaper for faculty and staff, lists the registry of the most recent academic vacancies. Copies may be acquired free of cost at the information desk at the Illini Union. It is published on the first and third Thursdays of each month.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN ACADEMIC POSITION
The hiring for academic positions is done by individual departments or units. There is no application form. Typically, in their advertisement for a position opening, a department or unit will ask for a cover letter and resume or vita. Letters of recommendation may also be requested. The search process typically operates by committee and may take from two to eight or more weeks after the closing date listed in the advertisement.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR AN ACADEMIC POSITION
Advertisements clearly state what is required and what is preferred.

Academic professional positions require a bachelor's degree at minimum and may require an advanced degree, depending on the position.

Faculty positions typically require a doctoral or other terminal degree.
