POLICY DEVELOPMENT AND INTERPRETATION

Prepare, update and distribute policy documents; draft new policies; review legislative activity for impact on academic human resources policy; and monitor compliance of academic staff members in accordance with current state/federal laws and University policies including educational loan default, independent contractor issues, employee access to records, unemployment eligibility, child of employee tuition waivers, etc.

 

Ø      Communication and Information Dissemination:

Prepare, update, and distribute policy documents, such as:

(1)   the biennial Academic Staff Handbook; (Deb Weidler)

(2)    the Champaign-Urbana Community Employer's Directory (for the Dual-Career Couples Program); (Deb Weidler)

(3)    the Academic Benefits and Services Guide, including the Summary of Appointment Benefits by Appointment Category; (Robin Pruitt)

Ø      Campus Administrative Manual (CAM) and Committee:

Prepare new policies and revisions for the Campus Administrative Manual, the majority of which fall in Section IX (Personnel Policies) of the manual. Serve on CAM committee charged with examination of the purpose and structure of the manual both printed and electronic.

Ø      Independent Contractor Issues:

Consult with units and act as liaison between units and the Office of Business Affairs on issues of categorizing an appointee as an employee or independent contractor.

Ø      Employee Access to Records:

In accordance with the law, handle requests of employees for access to their personnel records.

Ø      Appointment Policy and Appointments:

Participate in the development of new employment policy and its implementation such as parental leave, new sick leave policy, bereavement leave, performance review for academic professionals, etc.

Ø      Shared Benefits Withdrawal:

      Review applications for shared benefits sick live withdrawal for academic staff.  Awards of up to 45 days may be given for catastrophic illness.  Act as liaison between employee and unit.
